    Course Description:

    This course is designed to provide both a theoretical framework as well as practical application in the area of group work in the recovery of sexual addictions for individuals and couples. Specifically, students will understand the dynamics of a 12-step recovery group for sexual addicts, the importance of this group in maintaining sobriety, and the benefits of group membership for both the recovering addict and their spouse.

    Course Objectives:

    1. Students will understand the primary skills and attributes necessary to successfully facilitate 12-step and other types of recovery groups for sexual addictions.

    2. Students will demonstrate familiarity with a guiding theory for managing the group experience and the curative factors that facilitate the healing process for group participants.

    3. Students will demonstrate the ability to differentiate between the needs of addicts and partners and the ability to create a group environment that embodies safety for individuals from each of these groups.

    4. Students will be able to identify group leadership styles and approaches including characteristics of effective group leaders and various leadership styles. Attention will be given to the personal characteristics of group leaders as they pertain to the recovery group.

    Course Description:

    This course is designed to equip the learner to provide a comprehensive psychological assessment of sexually addictive behaviors and associated concerns, such as depression, bipolar disorders, personality disorders, and co-morbid/co-addictive concerns. Special attention will be given to the PAI, IASC, ECR-S, DAS, SAST-R, and other instruments.

    Course Objectives:

    1. Students will understand and be able to assess for the diagnostic criteria proposed in the DSM for paraphilias and other sexual disorders that are related to sexual addiction.

    2. Students will understand the co-morbid diagnoses prevalent within sexual addictions, and will understand the treatment implications for these co-morbid concerns.

    3. Students will demonstrate the ability to differentiate between sexual disorders caused by mental illness, relational conflict, and other underlying disturbances, and plan treatment accordingly.

    4. Students will utilize psychological assessment procedures in assessing for sexually addictive behaviors and associated disturbances in psychosocial functioning that may contribute to or exacerbate sexually addictive behavior.

    5. Students will understand the planning and facilitating of sexual addiction treatment based on the results of the assessment process.
    Course Description:

    This course is designed to introduce the learner to the history, philosophy and current trends in the treatment of sexual addictions. Students will explore the concept of healthy sexuality and the origins of sexually addictive behaviors, as well as identify models that inform the conceptualization and treatment of these addictive behaviors.

    Course Objectives:

    1. Students will understand the definition and etiology of sexual addictions, as well as basic assessment procedures in evaluating for the presence of a sexual addiction.

    2. Students will identify Carnes' historical model of the Sexual Addiction Cycle, as well as other contemporary models explaining sexually addictive functioning, most notable the Neuroaffective model of Sexual Addiction.

    3. Students will explore the physical, relational and spiritual dimensions that conrtibute to the etiology of sexually addictive behavior.

    Course Description

    This course explores the neurobiological underpinnings of addictions in general, with specific emphasis on process addictions and compulsive behavior. The impact of sexually addictive behaviors on neurological functioning will be examined by defining the salient structures and related operations most readily identified in the scientific literature.

    Course Objectives

    1. Students will be able to identify the major structures and neurotransmitters present in the human brain.

    2. Students will understand the neuroaffective etiology of addictive and problematic sexual behaviors and other addictive patterns.

    3. Students will understand the neurological impact of trauma is it effects individuals struggling with problematic sexual behaviors as well as the trauma experienced by spouses.

    4. Students will understand the dynamics of addiction interaction from a neurological perspective.
